Licensing and permits in NSW
Completing this course provides a recognised firearms safety training certificate which may be used as part of your NSW licence application. You must still apply for and be granted a firearms licence through NSW Police before you can legally possess or use a firearm.
If you intend to purchase a firearm, you will also need to obtain a Permit to Acquire (PTA) before you can legally acquire a firearm, which can only be completed after your license has been granted. Training alone does not authorise possession, use, or acquisition.
Genuine reason requirements
NSW applicants must demonstrate an accepted genuine reason when applying for a firearms licence. The most common genuine reasons for Category A and B longarms are:
- Sport or target shooting (membership of an approved shooting club is required)
- Recreational hunting or vermin control (requires written rural landowner permission, or rural land ownership or occupancy)
- Primary production (for eligible primary producers as part of farming or grazing activities)
We recommend confirming your eligibility and genuine reason requirements before submitting your application.
Age eligibility
- Adults Applicants for a firearms licence must be 18 years or older.
- Juniors Participants aged 12–17 may attend training where permitted and must be supervised by a responsible licensed adult in line with legal requirements.
